Mortenson Construction
Golden Valley, MN
Phase One completed in 2009
Phase Two currently under construction
One of the largest builders in the U.S., Mortenson’s Minneapolis headquarters failed to convey the company’s stature within the industry. The original 1970s campus was in need of an update, inside and out. Mortenson’s leadership wanted the renovation to rekindle employee pride by celebrating the construction trade. We first conducted a space analysis which revealed the opportunity to reduce company real estate by an entire floor. A new entry sequence and series of interactive first floor exhibits establish Mortenson’s prominence and history. A display of retired hammers reinforce a sense of dignity of the profession. Closed offices were removed in favor of an open environment, ripe for collaboration and casual collisions among employees. The positive change in corporate culture has been noted by all. David Mortenson credits our team with leading the company on a process of self-discovery.
